–  Seen Thru Rice Paper  --

Sometimes I recall a poem I've particularly enjoyed, as a set of imprinted images. These haiku-like snapshots often come directly from the poem. At other times they present as extensions, tangents or variations of the poem.
I share the examples below.

Martin Place- after reading Les Murray's An Absolutely Ordinary Rainbow

       winter blue-
a man stands weeping
     for all of us

     post office façade-
a pidgeon defects
     to the bank

scurry of litter-
the coffee shop spills
     black suits

           the crying stage-
a left-handed child
     draws him in chalk

North Coast Town - after reading Robert Gray's North Coast Town

  summer dawn-
the grit of yesterdays
in his eyes

auction sign-
jacaranda branches sub-divide
the foreshore

roof iron clangs
on the locked garage-
a drift of sand

heat build-up
     the stream of tourist cars
     flickers in windows

Loving Trees - after reading Shaw Neilson's Loving Trees

       spring morning
the lovers' long kiss
     by the kurrajong

     wedding photos-
the bride's veil gleams
     in plum tree shade

     fading footsteps-
mist holds moonlight
     in the orange tree

     distant thunder-
a black-shawled woman
     under the mulberry

Bowerbird - after reading Jean Kent's The Satin Bowerbird

        spring sky-
a flash of satin-blue
     among grevillea

     blue salvia
dances in the sunset-
     our open window

peeling bark-
the rasp of a bowerbird
     on its runway

           tangled sheets-
the veins of her wrist
     by moonlight

Greyhounds - after reading Robert Gray's Greyhounds

       dangling fag
a clutch of greyhounds
     in each hand

     whirrrr of rabbit-
the stretch and hump
     of the six dog

     misty dawn-
the click-click of hounds
     crossing the street

evening star
     an old dog settles
     by the deck chair

Birds at Nightfall - after reading Bruce Beaver's Nightfall

       mud flats at dusk-
a hunch-shouldered ibis
     spears a crab

     from water-skim
the lift to roosting-trees-
     streaked sunset

white birds
homing thru shades
     of winter blue

           last squabbles
hushed by nightfall-
     lapping of the river

Zoo-Keeper - after reading Dorothy Hewett's Zoo-Keeper and Zoo Story

  giraffes arch
their necks into twilight
our hands touch

animal stocktake-
the clang of steel doors
stills the peacocks

night rounds-
glint of a bear's eyes
in limestone shadow

           city twilight-
high-rise cells light up
     one by one
